Vuslat Foundation proudly supported a series of transformative Generous Listening Workshops at the 17th Istanbul Biennial, in collaboration with Tarek Atoui, İKSV Alt Kat, and Atölye Pikolo. This initiative was dedicated to cultivating a profound appreciation for listening among children and young people, aged 7-14. Through these workshops, participants had the unique opportunity to connect with art in a meaningful way during the two months of the Biennial.

The Essence of Generous Listening

Emphasizing Tarek Atoui’s renowned sound and listening-oriented art practice, the workshops were a vital part of his “Whispering Playground” project. They were designed to let young participants rediscover music and new technologies. Using custom-made electronic instruments, children and young people explored the realms of free expression and creativity. The workshops were not just about learning music but about understanding the nuanced difference between hearing and truly listening.

A Transformative Movement at Istanbul's Historic Bath

In line with the theme of the Biennial, these workshops served as a unique platform for participants to immerse themselves in the historical ambiance of one of Istanbul’s oldest baths. This setting provided an enriching backdrop for the workshops, allowing youngsters to connect with history through the act of listening.

Elevating Listening to an Art Form

The 17th Istanbul Biennial was an opportunity for artists and participants to engage in thought, conversation, and more importantly, listening. Vuslat Foundation seized this occasion to underscore the significance of listening as a powerful tool for nurturing connections and understanding. Our participation emphasized listening as an essential, yet often overlooked, component in fostering meaningful interactions.

Workshop Details and Impact

Throughout the Biennial, a total of 18 Generous Listening Workshops were conducted, each accommodating 15-20 participants and lasting an hour. These educational sessions, integral to Atoui’s artistic practice, evolved with each iteration, adapting to the diverse age groups and creative energies of the children and students. The workshops aimed to not only educate but also to inspire a transformative movement, placing generous listening at the forefront of our lives and culture.
