The Vuslat Foundation was honored to attend the ‘Becoming Better Ancestors’ GPC Retreat organized by Synergos in Sublime Comporta, Portugal. This transformative gathering brought together changemakers from across the globe to reflect on legacy, justice, and sustainability.

Integrating Generous Listening into the Retreat

As part of the retreat, the Vuslat Foundation introduced its Generous Listening framework, setting the tone for deep reflection and meaningful dialogue. Participants were invited to explore:

  • What it means to be a good ancestor.
  • How generous listening can shape the legacy we leave behind.
  • Ways to transform lives and the world through this practice.

To support these reflections, we provided conversation starter questions for community dinners and curated an audio guide with prompts for reflective walks, encouraging participants to connect deeply with themselves, each other, and nature.

A Space for Reflection and Connection

Over three days, the retreat offered a rich blend of activities, including reflective walks, meditation, somatic practices, and facilitated conversations. The aim was to challenge conventional thinking, foster collaboration, and create new possibilities for philanthropic work.

A Moment to Pause and Reflect

Our opening remarks set the stage for the retreat. Merve Çağlar, Director of the Vuslat Foundation, inspired participants with these words:

“Generous Listening asks us to go beyond hearing. It asks us to listen for what is not said, to listen with empathy, and to understand rather than respond. This practice benefits not just the speaker but transforms the listener as well, fostering authentic connections and a deeper sense of community. Together, let us listen generously to each other, to ourselves, and to nature to create a future that honors all generations.”

Continuing the Journey

The retreat emphasized the importance of pausing to consider our shared legacy and taking bold, courageous steps toward a more just and sustainable future. We are deeply grateful to Synergos for creating this space and to all the participants who engaged in generous listening and open dialogue.
